Maryland spent Tuesday evening working through one of its most active stretches of severe weather this summer, as the National Weather Service tracked a line of storms capable of producing tornadoes across the central and eastern parts of the state. By the time the line moved offshore, forecasters had issued a tornado watch spanning 19 counties and Baltimore City, along with a string of shorter, more urgent tornado warnings for communities directly in the storms’ path.
A Fast-Moving Afternoon of Storm Alerts
Forecasters at the National Weather Service’s Baltimore/Washington office flagged the risk hours before the first storms formed. In an early-morning forecast discussion, meteorologists pointed to a strong cold front moving through the region, combined with cooling air aloft, as the setup for damaging wind, large hail and an isolated tornado in the strongest cells. The Storm Prediction Center placed most of the forecast area, aside from far western Maryland, in a slight risk for severe weather.
That outlook firmed up shortly before 3 p.m., when the Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch covering 15 Maryland counties and Baltimore City, along with parts of Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. At 4:20 p.m., the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, upgraded the threat, issuing Tornado Watch 529 through 10 p.m. for 19 Maryland counties and Baltimore City, including Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Calvert, Caroline, Carroll, Cecil, Charles, Dorchester, Harford, Howard, Kent, Montgomery, Prince George’s, Queen Anne’s, Somerset, St. Mary’s, Talbot, Wicomico and Worcester. Forecasters estimated the broader mid-Atlantic watch area covered more than 16.3 million residents, 3,860 schools and 233 hospitals.
Tornado Watch vs. Tornado Warning: The Difference That Matters
The two terms sound similar but carry very different levels of urgency. A tornado watch means conditions across a wide region are favorable for tornadoes to form. It does not mean a tornado has been spotted, and it typically covers several hours and multiple counties. A tornado warning is the more serious alert. It means a tornado has actually been spotted by a trained observer or indicated by radar, and people in the warned area need to take shelter right away. Warnings are narrower and shorter, often lasting thirty to forty-five minutes and targeting the specific towns in a storm’s forecast path.
Tuesday’s event moved through both stages within a few hours, starting broad with the watch and narrowing repeatedly as individual cells showed rotation on radar.
Where the Warnings Struck Hardest
At 5:12 p.m., a severe thunderstorm warning went into effect for Baltimore and Harford counties, with forecasters citing wind gusts near 60 mph strong enough to snap tree limbs. The threat sharpened twenty minutes later. At 5:32 p.m., the Weather Service issued a tornado warning for Harford County, describing a storm moving east at 40 mph along a line stretching from near Delta toward Bel Air North. The warning covered Aberdeen, Havre de Grace, Bel Air South, Perryman, Rock Springs and Conowingo, with radar indicating rotation inside the storm.
More alerts followed at 6:10 p.m., 6:22 p.m. and 6:26 p.m. as the line pushed into northern and east-central Maryland. Northeastern Cecil County came under a tornado warning until 6:30 p.m. Minutes later, at 6:30 p.m., forecasters issued a tornado warning for east-central Anne Arundel County until 6:45 p.m. after radar picked up rotation in a storm over the South River. That warning listed Hillsmere Shores, Eastport, Bay Ridge and Highland Beach as the communities at greatest risk, with officials warning that flying debris could be deadly and that roofs, siding and mobile homes were especially vulnerable.
A separate severe thunderstorm warning covering parts of Anne Arundel and Prince George’s counties stayed in effect until 7 p.m., with forecasters citing the potential for gusts up to 70 mph.
Flooding, Wind and Airport Disruptions
The tornado threat was only part of the story. A flood watch covering Howard, Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Harford and Cecil counties, along with Baltimore City, remained in effect until 2 a.m. Wednesday, with forecasters warning that rainfall rates could approach two inches an hour in the heaviest storms. To the west, a separate severe thunderstorm watch covered Washington, Frederick and Allegany counties until 10 p.m.
The stormy weather also reached Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport and other regional airports, which saw ground stops as the line passed through, according to the Baltimore Sun. Trees and power lines came down in several communities, prompting scattered outages that residents tracked through Baltimore Gas and Electric’s outage map.
What Comes Next for Maryland Residents
As of Tuesday evening, the Weather Service had not confirmed a tornado touchdown from the storms, and officials cautioned that early damage reports remained preliminary. Tornado confirmation typically follows a ground survey by Weather Service meteorologists, who walk the damage path to measure wind speed and assign a rating on the Enhanced Fujita scale. Residents who spot storm damage are encouraged to report it to their county emergency management office or to the National Weather Service’s Baltimore/Washington forecast office, which will fold verified reports into its final assessment of the storm.
Staying Safe When the Sky Turns
Weather Service guidance for a tornado warning stays consistent no matter which county issues it. Move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor, stay away from windows, and get under something sturdy if possible. Mobile homes and vehicles offer little protection, so anyone caught in one should move to the nearest solid building. Maryland’s Department of Emergency Management also recommends keeping a charged device or battery-powered radio on hand, since the same storms that produce tornadoes frequently knock out power across the same counties.
