Ottawa County investigators have ruled the deaths of a Grand Haven Township family of eight a murder-suicide, closing the first major phase of an investigation that began with a house fire call on July 24.
Kristopher “Kris” Karolkiewicz, 47, shot and killed his wife, Amanda “Mandy” Karolkiewicz, 39, and their six children before setting fires inside the family’s home on Riverside Trail and turning the gun on himself, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s office released its findings during a press briefing on Monday, three days after the bodies were found.
What Happened in Grand Haven Township
Fire crews were first sent to the area near 148th Avenue and Mercury Drive around 8:30 a.m. Friday, July 24, after callers reported the smell of smoke. Crews searched but could not locate a fire and left the scene.
Just before noon, Ottawa County dispatch received new calls describing a home “full of smoke,” with white smoke visible from a window. Firefighters returned to the Riverside Trail address and, while working to clear the smoke, found multiple people dead inside, according to Fox 17 West Michigan. Investigators ultimately recovered eight bodies: two adults and six children.
Sheriff’s Office Confirms Cause and Manner of Death
On Monday, Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Captain Jacob Sparks told reporters that autopsies showed all eight victims died of gunshot wounds. The manner of death, however, differed by victim.
Kristopher Karolkiewicz’s death was classified as a suicide. The deaths of Amanda Karolkiewicz and their six children were each ruled homicides. Sparks said the weapon involved was a handgun that investigators believe was legally registered, and that no suspects remain outstanding.
“This is an unspeakable tragedy that we may never completely understand why it happened. But we will do our best to find the answers,” Sparks said, according to WOOD TV8.

Amanda Karolkiewicz worked as a substitute teacher at Peach Plains Elementary, part of Grand Haven Area Public Schools.
